We are preparing a collaborative report on Framapad, where everyone types their text simultaneously, and then comes the moment to add a diagram, a screenshot, or a logo. The reflex to copy-paste from the desktop does not work like in a traditional word processor.
Framapad, based on the Etherpad engine, does not include an image insertion button comparable to that of Google Docs or LibreOffice Writer. Therefore, one must adopt an appropriate method, or risk breaking the layout of the shared document.

Technical Limitations of Framapad for Displaying Images
Framapad is primarily an online collaborative text editor. Its Etherpad engine synchronizes text modifications among participants in real-time, but image file handling remains very limited. No integrated media manager, no reliable drag-and-drop, no native resizing.
A help thread on Framacolibri even reports a “destroyed” document after a direct image paste attempt. This is not an isolated case: pasting a large image or one in an unsupported format can cause content misalignment or even data loss on the pad. The Framasoft service was not designed to handle rich layouts with photos and illustrations.

Insert an Image on Framapad via a Hosted URL
The most reliable method is to use a link to an image already hosted online. The principle: you do not upload the file to Framapad; you indicate where to find the image on the web.
Host the Image on a Third-Party Service
First and foremost, the image must be accessible via a public URL. Several free options exist to host a photo or diagram:
- Upload the file to an image hosting service like Framapic (Framasoft service, as long as it remains available), Imgur, or a Framaspace area if you have one.
- Place the image in an online shared folder (Nextcloud, Google Drive in public mode) and retrieve the direct link to the file, which ends with .png, .jpg, or .gif.
- Use a personal website or blog: copy the exact address of the image by right-clicking on it, then “Copy image address.”
The URL must point directly to the image file, not to a web page that contains the image. If the link does not end with an image extension, Framapad will likely not display it.

Integrate the Link into the Pad
Once you have the URL, return to Framapad. Depending on the version of Etherpad used by the instance, two scenarios arise:
- If the pad’s toolbar offers an image insertion icon (a small landscape pictogram), click on it and paste the URL into the designated field. The image will then display in the body of the text.
- If no dedicated button appears, you can paste the URL directly into the text. Some Etherpad instances automatically convert image links into visual previews, while others leave them as clickable links.
- As a last resort, insert an HTML tag (when the pad allows it) of the type <img src=”URL”> directly into the content. This option depends on the instance’s configuration.
Feedback varies on this point across Framapad instances: some accept HTML rendering, while others block it for security reasons. It is recommended to test on a draft pad before touching the working document.
Precautions to Avoid Breaking the Collaborative Document
Directly pasting an image from the clipboard (Ctrl+V after a screenshot) is the riskiest operation. On most Framapad instances, binary image copy-pasting is not handled correctly. The pad attempts to interpret the data, fails, and the surrounding content may become corrupted.
Here are some reflexes to adopt before adding an image:
- Export a copy of the pad (in HTML or plain text format) before any image manipulation. The export menu is usually found at the top right of the pad.
- Prefer lightweight images, below a few hundred kilobytes. A large file slows down loading for all connected collaborators.
- Use the PNG format for screenshots and diagrams, JPEG for photos. Avoid heavy formats like BMP or TIFF.

If the image does not display after inserting the URL, check that the link is indeed public. A link protected by authentication (private Nextcloud, restricted access Google Drive) will not be rendered by the pad.
Framaspace Alternative for Documents with Integrated Images
When the need for images exceeds simple occasional additions, Framapad is not the right tool. Framasoft offers Framaspace, a complete digital space based on Nextcloud, which includes a collaborative document editor with native image management, drag-and-drop, and resizing.
In Framaspace, you edit a file in standard format (ODT or DOCX via OnlyOffice or Collabora) with a complete toolbar. Image insertion works exactly like in a traditional word processor: file selection, placement in the text, size adjustment.
For a project that mixes text and numerous illustrations, migrating to a Framaspace document avoids technical workarounds and the risks of data loss related to Etherpad’s limitations. The Framaspace service relies on a registration form with a limited number of accounts, but the offer remains free and supported by the Framasoft project in a logic of responsible digital growth.
Inserting images on Framapad remains more of a workaround than a native feature. The hosted URL method is the only one that works reliably on most instances. For any document where visuals play a central role, switching to a more complete editor like those available in Framaspace remains the most solid solution.
